The Importance of Open Source Components in the Industry

I have a lot of experience dealing with other embedded devices, specifically running Linux. A common pattern I see in the industry is that companies will take like the Linux kernel or other components that they need for their product. And oftentimes they will not submit those changes back upstream and they'll just kind of live off on the side. It's a very common pattern I See with like phones and set top boxes and other embedded devices that use open source components.
