How Google X Fits Into Google

X is an unusual innovation lab because most corporate innovation labs were set up to move the core mission of the company forward. The founding project was self-driving cars and that's not really anything to do with search advertising or any of the other Google products. Initially, it was all just about building interesting breakthrough technology. But then we realized very quickly, if it doesn't solve a real problem, it's also kind of pointless.
