I Don't Care Who You Are, Just Listen to the Language
Dostoyevsky writes that his feelings for verganov are best described as disinterested pathy. He tells maria in one of his letters, just listen to the language. The idea that he feels disinterested sympathy for the rival he's being rejected for is obviously nothing but a cope. No man is feeling anything in that situation except an insane mix of rage and resentment and sel hatred. And he's doing those things out of cowardice, trying, in subversive ways, to show the woman that he really is the better man after all.
