CHAPTER

The Queen's Proclamation of 1858: A Charter of Indian Secularism

Queen Victoria is made to announce that British rule will be henceforth a rule of non-interference and tolerance. In a way you can see it as a charter of Indian secularism at a period when England itself is not secular, where there's an established church in the head of it. More interesting yet is the fact that Indian notables take to this proclamation in a massive way so that it takes by surprise even the British statesmen who had issued it. They adopt it, they like it, but they use it over the decades after the immunity against the British bureaucracy in India itself.
