Augustine's central claim is that all of scripture has a single overarching purpose to lead its reader to karitas. For Augustine, this word usually translated charity means a twofold love, towards our neighbor and towards God. We should also bear love towards ourselves, but Augustine thinks that no one needs to be instructed in that respect. All humans naturally love themselves as we can see from their instinct for self-preservation.
