Lister, Semmelweiss, Pasteur, and Sepsis
16 of the 35 people that had undergone amputations between 1864 and 1866 before carbolic acid, 16 of those 35 had died. That number dropped down to only six of 40 between 1867 and 1868 after carbolic acid. As you might expect, Lister's articles weren't immediately accepted with open arms by the medical and surgical community. Some believed Lister to be overstating his results, and others dismissed it out of hand due to its reliance on germ theory.
