Deafness and Its Importance

After 1880, sign language had to find its way back as a reborn language. The vulnerability of it makes those who value respect and meet it, hold onto it tightly. It is culture, community, identity, human rights and freedom. Ordering it down, infantilizing it, teaching it badly, appropriating and abusing it has a knock on effect to those who need it most. After spending thirty years of my life apologizing for my existence, I learnt to walk into a space without making myself smaller than a problem. Instead of finding myself, I found I liked myself for the first time.
