The dog Maddox manuals are criticized for being super insular. They dealt with theological matters and sometimes philosophical matters, but they worked only within the framework of Neoscholasticism. But that meant was that they effectively resigned themselves to obscurity. The moral life comes to be understood as person versus law - what does the law restrain you from doing and what does it permit you to do? We would want to live a life not just following the law for the sake of following the law, or not just trying not to sin, but rather to seek the attitude to see communion with God without getting obsessed with sin.
