The US Army Landings at Omaha Beach in 1944

The Germans were particularly well prepared in the owner half sector of Omaha Beach. The division that was positioned there was what you call a first line mobile division as distinct from the static divisions that manned the other beach defenses further along the coast. They had so-called stomach and ear units which were people with some sort of infirmative stomach problem or they couldn't actually hear properly. So they were placed in in units where they thought they would do less damage and little was demanded of them.
