What's Going to Work in Film?
I like artists who. do something new that connects up with deep human questions and truths. I think this is probably more possible, at least in a way of communicating to the rest of us in film. It happens less than it used to where you have high and popular art sort of coming together. We were talking at lunch about a jazz music class. That was a period in American history where high and popular came together film still does this a little bit. There are certain broad principles about art and how it works. But the idea that you can figure out in the abstract for all time Exactly how art's going to work isn't true. Especially now.
