How to Get Permission to Film in Public Places

I'm curious about how you went about getting permission from those managers or whatnot to filming those places. I never really get stopped. All the time, some people say, I just don't put me on camera, but then other times, hey, man, can I be on camera? You always got to make sure you ask permission that sometimes I will take the iPhone running gun and but I would never like feel nobody.
