The Importance of Incentives in the Emergency Department

Papu: One way to interpret that finding would be that part of the reason why we might see a higher mortality rate for people who are seen in the ED and then discharged home. Papu: The other hypothesis is that those hospitals just see really sick patients and even if they're doing their job well, you're going to end up with some sick patients that die. So I think that at least in these very low admission rate hospitals, there's something going wrong in the first case.
