In 1969, a fire on the Keioga River in Ohio led to U.S. and Canadian laws trying to clean up water. The US also held its first Earth Day holiday in 1970. Dr. Seuss made fun of it in his 1971 book "The Lorax" There were other trends, especially a big oil spill in California.
