The Importance of Marriage in the History of the United States

In 1897, Ralph K. Davies got a job working as an office boy for a company called Standard Oil when he was 15. At a high society ball in 1957, Ralph and Luis Davies' daughter Ellen met Richard Stockton Rush Jr. The two families continue to be very wealthy and powerful throughout the life of the new United States. Gradually, the two families get intertwined through marriage. Benjamin Rush portrayed himself as an abolitionist and crusader against racism while owning an enslaved black man.
