The Origin of the Letter G in Old English
The Irish form of G, called Yogue, was the standard letter in the north. It could represent any of the sounds which it evolved from or which were still evolving from the original G sound. The J sound wasn't added to the Roman alphabet until early French. So those earlier English scribes had to come up with a new way to represent this J sound at the end of English words like edge.
