Taking a Bear on a Cruise in the Cold War

The Westpac guarded the sea lanes, trained off the coast of Japan and flew the flag at various ports of call. Our F3H demons intercepted Soviet bombers that periodically dropped down the snoop on us. We chased them as soon as our radars caught them. Proving up our ability to destroy them at will was a game we played with the Russians for the entire Cold War.
