The Old English Word for Law Was Doom, a Judgment
Vowels themselves were sometimes making this same kind of shift. Once again, sounds produced in the back of the mouth were moving forward. Back vowels were becoming front vowels. It did result in a lot of words where we have two or more versions of the same word.
