UX and UI are hard in this space, partly because there are not a lot of great predecessors from whom we can crib. Scalability challenges come into play when you operate at very large scale on very large datasets. There is an unknown bit of it, you don't know the specific way in which a large scale distributed compute system is going to fail on you. It's like a known known versus an unknown unknown.
