What Are the Differences Between Humans and Animals?

The early church fathers argued that there was a significant difference between humans and animals. Theologians believe that animals basically didn't have a soul, so they wouldn't be resurrected at the end of time when humans are all resurrected and then judged. And neither could an animal go to heaven, or hell. Linked to this is the other crucial idea that animals are more violent than humans and governed by their own instinctive desires and appetites. Some animals were tried in church courts and others in secular criminal courts. Soit's a really enigmatic phenomenon.
