The Black Panther Party in Oakland, California
The Black Panther Party was officially founded on October 15, 1966. Huey Newton and Bobby Seal were college students at Merritt College in Oakland,. They first became politicized by a study group called the Afro-American Association. The party varied greatly from chapter to chapter, city to city; some of its members engaged in crime.
