The Origins of the Treasure Digging Myth
Joseph Smith was only 17 years old when he told the story about his September 22nd, 1823 evocation of the angel Moroni. Peter Lavanda says in his book The Angel and the Sorcerer, these two themes burial mounds and ancient Jews in America are central to the Mormon thesis. Thomas Jefferson actually ordered an excavation of a Native American burial mound and he was extremely obsessed with them it said. George Washington was also similarly intrigued by Native American burial mounds.
