The esthos of manhood back then was very much geared towards caretaking, about responsibility. The industrial revolution that took work out of the home. Men are not working with people they love and have a moral bond with,. Instead they are working as individuals in competition with other men. And it began to seem that to get ahead in that kind of commercialized workplace, it was necessary for men to be more self-interested or ambitious.
