Beethoven is always previewing things, whether you know it or not. Those sixteenth notes weren't just an accompaniment for variety's sake. They also serve as the basis for a miny fugue based on the bum bum bum bum rhythm. This is extraordinarily soft, mysterious and, in my opinion, disquieting music.
