President Pierce signs bill, Treaty of Messia ratified, and the emergence of the Republican Party
President Pierce signs the bill on May 30th, but confesses to being more anxious than ever before. The Senate ratifies the Treaty of Messia on April 25th, 1854, which brings the fight over slavery in the American West to the surface. The passage of the Kansas-Nebraska bill leads to the collapse of the Whigs and the emergence of the anti-slavery Republican Party.
