John Cameron: I like the way you put the debate as between the relative threat of the threat to freedom from these various quarters. So what do you see as the watershed moments in history that swung the balance one way or the other? John Cameron: The democratization of the modern state does a lot to make rationalism more attractive to people in the generations that I'm looking at. People who knew to distrust an absolute monarch then don't distrust the same power when it is wielded by an absolute parliament.
