In the very first scene, yes, the classmates' mom, Susan's mom, is really happy. Makes Walter's mom feel sort of inadequate because she's relinquishing her son to drive up with them. When he gets to know the girl who he would have driven up with, he learns that in fact her mom, who seemed so perfect to his mom, was actually unhappy too. That was the moment when a lot of women were realizing they weren't happy with their lives as wives and mothers. And I think it was just a little bit of a flashboard at the end.
