Every 90 minutes, the mother cells produce a daughter cell. The graduate student throws the daughter cell in the trash until the mother cell has divided 20 or 21 times. If you try to look for mothers that have divided 21 times, they would have 20, literally 21 bud scars on them. Only one out of five million cells can ever be like that.
