A lot of modern day hunter gat societies used this as one of the mechanisms to kick out someone who's acted out. If you murdered somebody from within the tribe, that was considered such a heinous act that it wasn't just you who would be ostracized. We are hard wired to want to get other people to like us. And in fact, the opposite is also hard wired into our d and a which means that when we don't get the approval of individuals around us, we tend to get very scared.
