The best acquisitions are often horizontal mergers where the company acquires companies that have similar distribution channels, customers, suppliers. There are often cost energies, especially economies of scale and sharing fixed costs across acquired businesses in this sort of merger. The ones that are really successful are things like Teladine and Berkshire who know how to pivot so that they make certain kinds of acquisitions when those make sense.
