Matthew 1–2

The Two Testaments

CHAPTER

Son of David, the Son of Abraham, Is a Title for the Messiah

The first line of Matthew's gospel opens with the phrase "the book of the Genesis" It is a direct citation or echo of two different passages in the book of Genesis. Son of David is a title for the Messiah, the one who is to be the king of Israel. Abraham's descendants are said to be a blessing to all nations; that too is an important theme for Matthew.
