The Transition From Old English to Middle English
In the nine hundreds, there was a clear contrast in britain between what was happening politically and what was happening linguistically. When norman french arrived, it really just accelerated the changes which were already under way. So we have to keep in mind that english wasn't the fixed, stable language that we have to day. During the late anglo saxon period, it was much more fluid and variable.
