The Step in Stepmother and Stepchild
Athelstan was born into the west saxon noble family, but brought up in mercia. His stepmother sent him packing when he wasn't old enough to live with her. This decision inadvertently played a big role in the ultimate unification of england. The word step derives from an old english term which meant an orphan.
