Stoics knew that we are at risk of this kine of selective thinking. They trained themselves by visualizing the broader perspective and in many ways, expanding the sen psychologically. One way of doing that was to picture things from high above. I only noticed this recently, but there's a famous passage in marcus aurelius where he says, the mind free from violent passions is like an impenetrable citadel. And i thought, that's intriguing, because any athenian piloso, there are many acropolises in the ancient world. It's just a fortified building on top of a hill.
