The Mycenaean Temple of Artemis

The final two sanctuaries of Artemis that we will discuss today are at Delos and Ephesus, both of which put forward competing claims to be the birthplace of the goddess. As many as five garments at a time were worn by these images, a practice that allowed worshippers to feel that they had achieved the closest possible contact with the goddess. At Delos, the Triad of Apollo, Artemis, and Lido was worshipped from the 8th century BC onwards,. These cults may have had mycenaean antecedents there.
