In 19 76, i tried to apprentice myself to any venture capital firm that would hire me. And they all turned me down, including claner perkins. So i cold called my way into the highest ranking executive at intel and got a summer job writing bench marks for intail micro processrs. This was the mid seventies, and intail had just invented the eight-bit micro processer. It was the engine behind all kinds of innovations. I didn't know anything about building businesses, and i certainly did not know anything about venture capital. Their advice was really very good. Simply put, they said, john, go get a real job.
