Many people who buy the cheapest food, clothing and housing available to them are doing so because they have no other option. It's almost akin tothe monastery mind set in the sense that it's kind of exhilarating and freeing to feel as though you need very little to survive and to be content. So i understand the appeal of the ultra frugal mind set. But there's a certain strain of this type of parlance that feels a little bit problematic. And think this reply really nailed it, playing poverty.
