"I was doing 40 carrots in Wallingford, Connecticut with Joan Fontaine. And I went back to my room on a Saturday and there was a Mary Tyre Lemorshow," James said. "In my head, I said, wow, they're doing a half hour a week and I'm doing a two hour show a week." He added: "And so that's what gave me the idea of 'Mary' The first show that I worked on on Broadway was a show that my dad wrote called Holly Go Lightly".
