The Relationship Between the Declaration and the Constitution
Lincoln believed that the two really did have a relationship. The declaration, you might say, is the soul which inhabits the constitution. Lincoln uses this image borrowed from the Book of Proverbs about a picture of silver and an apple of gold. In other words, the two work in tandem.
