There is a huge subconscious in this book, but the characters have, there is no inner character in any of the characters. And the whole thing is suffused by Franz Kafka's subconscious. The situation with the women isn't because of an overarching drive on behalf of the inner lives of the characters,. It's because of a fretful or fantastical or dreamlike experience of Franz Kafka.
