Outer edge crew members testified that while head counts were routine, no one in particular took responsibility for conducting them. The prosecution stated that any confusion regarding the head count or whether a couple had jumped back into the water could have been easily rectified if a crew member had simply checked the dialogue. Nan's defence lawyer relied heavily on the theory that the couple had ended their own lives or faked their own deaths. He read out excerpts from both diaries, revealing their personal and private content publicly for the first time.
