What Was It About Wilmington That Made It Special?
The 1898 coup kept a long white supremacist campaign in North Carolina designed to strip black people of the vote and remove them from public office forever. Plotted by white politicians and businessmen, this takeover would not have been possible without the city's white soldiers and police, who led a killing spree on November 10th, 1898. The mob gathered in the center of Wilmington and marched first to the offices of the Daily Record newspaper. They then moved on to the Brooklyn neighborhood, a popular spot for music and dancing. It's believed that as many as 25 people were murdered just on this spot on this corner.
