In the 1910s and 1920s, scientists had to learn how to blow glass as a science research student. You had to build your own apparatus; there were no CNC milling machines back then. So you had to make it out of glass with your own hands. And this is like just all these kind of weird practical both problems and solutions that happen in nitty gritty work of science.
