i think the characters are in this very brutal environment, they're pushed to being very emotionally honest. When you are in an extreme circumstance, the desire to be truthful and to get story down is very powerful. i can'd hove understood that on an intellectual level as a younger man. But now i'm 28, so i feel like i'm past my physical pique,. And more, maybe more importantly, just on practical terms, the time came a couple years ago to get a move on if i wanted to do things like own a house or get a decent salary later in my life.
