For me, I was in a very specific situation doing the research that I was doing in a statistics department. That's reflected in my dissertation and how I think about problems and methods for learning from data. So then maybe going back to before your PhD, did you always have an affinity towards quantitative things like statistics and mathematics? Yes, quantitative, yes; but an interesting machine learning starting to take over.
