We're primed in some respects for someone who will acknowledge us, speak to us as if. And so I think part of the risk as it were is that we increasingly turn to machines to supply this need. In Japan, robots were for a time perceived as a solution to the crisis of elder care. There's a recent just published book on the failure of that project. But this is one of the non-apocalyptic dangers that we face: It would augment rather than address the problem of loneliness.
