Brain Science with Ginger Campbell, MD: Neuroscience for Everyone

CHAPTER

The Right Perspective From Which to Understand Meditation Is a Confusion of Levels

Meditation is a perfectly legitimate scientific question to ask whether practice of meditation in various settings according to various sets has long-term measurable changes on the brain there's nothing wrong with asking that. But if we thought we could understand music let alone Bach simply by looking at the neural activity that would be a kind of category mistake or confusion of levels. Meditation is a it's an individual practice but it's also a social practice and it's one that takes place in a culture so it involves communities of practitioners culturally transmitted norms and conceptual frameworks you're not going to understand any of that if you're looking just at the brain now.
