The first documented es, the ones that popped up in the newspapers that we were able to find, appeared in 18 86 with four regular push carts lined along hester street. The trade was actually legal by this point in the late nineteenth century. You would need a license eventually, but there would actually be a larger number of unlicensed push carts. And thus you could find them all over in nearly every working class neighborhood in new york.
