The Origins of Folk Tales

Scholars were only concerned with the text itself. illiterate peasants were not seen as creators of traditions, but rather carriers of traditions. And so essentially no credit was ever given to the actual story teller. In this way, folklore, which was being studied by urban intellectuals, could be used as a way to track progress. So it's like we've move beyond superstition and into an enlightened era. We're rational now.
