The Importance of Ideological Commitment in the Soviet Union
It's an interesting counterfactual if you were to take away that ideological component of the Soviet Union, because this is a major motivator for so many of the Western spies. For example, God did not create man, Jesus is not the Son of God, there is no life after death. A key to communism then is a particular understanding of the market, irrespective of state market relations. Communist ideology would dictate that it only matters what kind of market China has,. Not whether China is a communist country with a veneer of market economics or whether it is a capitalist country with a nominally communist government.
