The History of Green Island

The name of Green Island came quite late in 1949, when the Chinese nationalists decided to give it a more positive-sounding name than its original one. Today, that prison is the Green Island Human Rights Culture Park. The SS President Hoover stands for Screw Steamer, a screw-propeller-driven steamship. It was named after its founder, Robert Dollar, who immigrated from Scotland to Canada with his family in 1857.
